HPSL Day 2024

This year’s HPSL Day, hosted by the University of Freiburg, took place
on October 25th, 2024, at the Haus zur Lieben Hand in Freiburg. The
event started with an opening address by Prof. Dr. Daniela Marzo
(Romanistik), followed by an icebreaking activity, during which the
participants played a Never Have I Ever game around the themes of
academia and doctoral studies. A small price was given to the winner.

A Heads Up was then organized to enable the audience to get to know
each other better, working in groups.

After a coffee break, Dr. Christa Schneider gave an inspiring keynote
speech entitled (Not) a Secret: New Opportunities and Challenges in
(Socio-)Linguistics in the Age of Artificial Intelligence. This
presentation was followed by a Q&A session to give the audience an
opportunity to interact and ask questions to Dr. Schneider.

Following a well-deserved lunch break, a Kahoot containing questions
related to linguistic facts was organized.

The highlight of the afternoon was a poster session in which
participants presented and discussed their research.

The poster session was followed by a World Café, during which the
participants could write down ideas and exchange about different
questions related to academia and doctoral studies.

The day ended with a presentation of the HPSL resources and website
service by Dr. Cynthia Dermarkar (University of Freiburg) followed by
an evening buffet.

Our HPSL Day was attended by around 40 participants from both
universities of Basel and Freiburg as well as visiting researchers.
This day gave members of the HPSL an invaluable opportunity to connect
with researchers from different fields and across universities and to
foster a sense of community within the doctoral school. We hope that
all participants profited from this event and that it inspired new
collaborations, friendships, and activities within the HPSL network.
