Abstract

The field of linguistics has seen a lively debate around the potential and dangers of Large Language Models (LLMs) over the past two years. Opinions cover the entire spectrum, from those who dismiss LLMs as completely irrelevant to a genuinely linguistic research agenda to others who embrace them as a revolution in the field. I will position myself in between, using my own research in World Englishes to show that (i) the widespread adoption of LLMs in daily life has raised interesting new research questions and (ii) LLMs can be useful ‘copilots’ for some types of sociolinguistic analysis.
