Day 1 – Thursday 9 November 2023
10:00 – 11:00: Introductory presentation on the “Shared Reading in the Age of Digitalization”
(SHARD) project and the use of empirical methods to investigate literary reception
11:00 – 12:30: Hands–on session on observational methods (Applied to the investigation of a
shared reading group session)
12:30 – 14:00: Lunch
14:00 – 16:00: Hands–on session on focus group methods
16:00 – 16:15: Coffee break
16:15 – 17:30: Group discussion/reflection
Day 2 – Friday 10 November 2023
10:00 – 11:00: Presentation on extended focus group case study (2 month long Instagram study)
11:00 – 11:15: Coffee break
11:15 – 12:30: Consultation with early career researchers who are using or wanting to use
ethnographic or participatory methods in their research (open to all participants)
• How to handle large amounts of qualitative data? Where to start with your analyses?
• How to communicate qualitative results or mixed–method results effectively? How to
choose what to include in a report and what not?
• What about the research ethics involved in ethnographic and participatory research?
12:30 – 14:00: Lunch
14:00 – 16:00: Consultation with early career researchers (focus on SHARD, but open to all
participants)
