I'm interested in how Other-Initiated Repair is mobilized to manage intersubjectivity and negotiate shared knowledge in multi-party institutional interactions. My doctoral thesis is realised within the SNF funded project ‘Speaking in Public: Social interactions within large groups. Contributions from a conversation analytic multimodal perspective.’. The empirical data comprises extensive video recordings (about 50 hours) of the public meetings organized within a participatory democracy project in urban planning in a large French city, where the citizens were invited to contribute to the initial conceptual part of the work.
The participants’ use of O-I-R shows their orientation to the exhibition of private vs. public knowledge as consequential for the accomplishment of various interactional and political agendas and participation frameworks.
The study demonstrates shared knowledge as a situated interactional achievement, continually negotiated and brought into being by the interactants.
