Against the backdrop of exemplar theory, a number of priming experiments have shown that listeners tend to perceive the linguistic variants they consider typical of the speaker they listen to - irrespective of the actual speech signal. This PhD project is based on the assumption that the degree of such priming effects is dependent on the salience of the test variable; prominent priming effects are only expected for highly salient variables. Liverpool will be the testing ground for this hypothesis. In phase one, production data will be collected to allow for a first broad distinction of several phonological variables into a salient and a non-salient group. At least three generations of speakers will be considered in order to be able to detect a potential change of Scouse stereotypes in the city. In phase two, priming experiments will be conducted for every variable investigated. If the initial assumption is corroborated, the degree of the priming effect will correlate with the broad categorisation from phase one. The priming effect of a variable might then even be used as a numerical measure (quantifiable as the amount of "stereotypically" perceived tokens) for its sociolinguistic salience, thereby lending somewhat more precision and comparability to the notoriously vague concept of salience.
