In the last two decades Content and Language Integrated Learning (henceforth CLIL) programmes, where a non-linguistic subject such as biology or history is taught in an additional language, have become increasingly popular; consequently, research on CLIL has become increasingly popular, too. There are two substantial gaps in current CLIL research to which I both want to make a contribution with my dissertation. First, there is a general lack of research on CLIL in the Swiss context, which is astonishing considering the fact that Switzerland does have a variety of CLIL and CLIL-like programmes, among which the late-secondary educational model called ‘bilinguale Maturität’ [bilingual baccalaureate] is a particularly popular type of bilingual education in secondary schools. Second, there is a research gap with regard to CLIL and science teaching. Natural sciences have, especially by science teachers, been considered to be one of the most difficult subjects to teach due to the high amount of technical terms. Nevertheless, research on the role of these technical terms and how they exactly affect communication in the CLIL classroom has not advanced, yet. Therefore, the proposed dissertation project aims at investigating the interface of biology as a subject and its linguistic requirements for students as well as for teachers in a CLIL and a non-CLIL environment and how this manifests itself in classroom discourse. Also, I am interested in the negotiation of meaning with regard to these technical terms, particularly in the correlation of English and German technical terms. The dissertation project will build up on my MA thesis (Bieri, 2015) where I investigated the specific differences found in classroom interaction in four CLIL and non-CLIL biology lessons in a late-secondary CLIL programme in Switzerland. The rich data gathered but not used in the MA thesis will be transcribed and then analysed through a mixed methodology of a qualitative as well as a quantitative approach. With my dissertation project, I will thus not only make a much needed contribution to Swiss CLIL, but – with its specific focus on the negotiation of technical terms in CLIL and non-CLIL biology classroom – I will also make a contribution to the gap between CLIL research and science education.
