The Tatar minority of Poland, Lithuania and Belarus - usually referred to as Polish-Lithuanian, Lithuanian or Byelorussian Tatars - has been peacefully settling in Middle and Eastern Europe for many centuries. From the 14th century onward, the Tatars left their country of origin, the khanate of the Golden Horde, to settle down in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
In their new surroundings the Tatars on the one hand abandoned their native (Turkic) language and adapted instead the Slavic varieties which were spoken by their neighbours. On the other hand, they maintained their religion and muslim traditions.
This is reflected in the mostly religious literature of the Polish-Lithuanian Tatars, which is written in various languages. The Oriental languages manuscripts are written in are Arabic, (Ottoman)Turkic and very rarely Persian. Besides these, Slavic varieties dominate the literature. However, most manuscripts are not monolingual but are either composed of fragments in different languages respectively varieties or are completely interlineary translated (like the exegesis of the Qur'an).
Irrespective of the language employed the manuscripts are always written in Arabic script. The Slavic varieties used in the manuscripts are generally classified roughly as either Byelorussian or Polish or as a mixture of both - a precise identification of these varieties has hardly been sought. The thought that these Slavic varieties could have been affected by language contact, either Slavic-Slavic or Oriental-Slavic, is a totally new one and has never been investigated.
Thus, I would like to study the Slavic varieties as written by the Polish-Lithuanian Tatars. The corpus I intend to work with consists of four manuscripts, which are with regards to content partly identical. By investigating these four manuscripts I hope to be able to show (i) that the language used is by no means either standard Polish or standard Byelorussian, but (ii) that it strongly varies and (iii) that this variation is mainly induced by Slavic-Slavic and (iv) possibly attributed to Oriental-Slavic language contact.
