Complex dynamic systems theory and L2 development


After explaining what a complex dynamic system is and how it links with a dynamic usage based view of language and language acquisition, I will show its relevance to tracing L2 development with several case studies. I will argue that variability (rapid ups and downs within an individual’s language behavior), variation (major differences between individuals’ developmental paths) and variety (differences in developmental paths for different sub-systems of the language and at different levels of proficiency) should be accepted as the norm in L2 development. I will then speculate about what this means for teaching. For example, in a dynamic usage based view of learning, forming strong associations between forms, their uses and meanings is what is needed and therefore frequency of meaningful exposure is one of the main drivers of development. Moreover, during L2 development, variability (the use of both target and non-target forms) are needed to make progress.
